There’s one thing I’ve come to hold dear over the years—one that remains with me regardless of what happened yesterday. That thing is this: Each morning holds a promise. A promise that, no matter how bad things may have been yesterday, today opens a door to something new. Today gives us the opportunity of a new beginning, of chilling again, of reconnecting, and of hoping. Life shouts in our face, loud and clear, and makes it very clear to us that you are still around, so let’s go ahead.

And what does this promise extend? That despite weighing down by past failures, I can still stand up again. That even after the disillusionment of the past, I can still chase my dreams, bask in sunlight, and discover joy even in ordinary things. Be it a hundred times or a million ones – every dawn will expose the way to defeat each one of them. It is the universe giving me an empty page and saying, “Write something better today.”

It’s a beautiful day!

What a beautiful day it is today!
How melodious is the tune of the birds
flying so high in the bright blue sky?
How soothing is the gentle breeze
that brushes gently on my soft chubby cheeks?
How sight-blinding is the rising radiance of the sun?
that fills me with confidence
the confidence to face the day!
Oh the church clock chimes continuosly
in rhythm to the thumbing beats of my heart
"Time to face another day!"
it seems to say
Oh, what a beautiful morning it is today!

Is it a good morning or…?

I’ve grown to love the mornings, not only as a time of day, but as a state of mind—one of do-over. With each blink of my eyes to greet the light, I view it as a chance. Maybe I don’t get to decide what’s next, but I get to decide how I go into it. As long as I still breathe, I have a voice in how my page turns. That in itself is reason enough to have me thankful.

It makes us develop, change, and keep pace. If the birds in flight can remain unaware of the uncertainty of the direction of the wind, why can’t we attempt to believe the direction of life in a similar manner?

The birds simply spread their wings and have faith that the air will sustain them. That is a lesson of surrender, of courage, and of freedom. And perhaps, if we listen closely enough, the same wind that strokes our cheek in the morning is trying to tell us something. It’s reminding us that we’re still capable, still needed, and still growing. Life doesn’t get postponed; neither do we. And each time we breathe in the freshness of a new day, we’re being reminded that we’re still in the competition.

Each new day is an opportunity—not for you and me perhaps, but for all of us—to move forward, look back, open ourselves to something more than we were yesterday. It’s a daily invitation to be more, know more, be more peaceful. We may not always notice huge growth day by day, but we can always opt for movement over stagnation. We can opt for presence over absence.

Let’s discuss what it’s like to truly see the beauty of the day. Mornings consist of small things that whisper hope. The quiet trickle of sunlight through the window, the gentle caress of cool air on your face, the smell of breakfast, the happy trill of birds singing sweet melody—these are not ambient sounds. These are reminders. These are reminders. Reminders that life goes on, that the world keeps moving, that there is beauty in movement.

The optimism that I draw from getting up and seeing the sunrise can’t be translated. It’s as if life itself is pushing me ahead. The tick-tock of the clock keeps pace with the rhythm of my heart, reminding me it’s time to try again. I am brought back to the truth that regardless of how unsure I am of what tomorrow will be like, I’ve already made it through each day that led me to where I am now. By itself, this is sufficient enough for me to endure whatever life brings my way.

But not all mornings are good to start. We wake up in a daze sometimes. We’re still clutching yesterday’s shame or tomorrow’s anxiety. That is human. That is normal. Most importantly is what we do with what’s next. We can let the emotions take over the whole day, or opt to quietly change gears and say, “What can I make of today, even as is?

The reality is, our morning is what our thinking is. If you think it is a good day, it is. If you think it is going to be a terrible day, then chances are it will turn out to be one. The play that we script in our minds in the morning tends to become the play that we perform the rest of the day. That is the power of perception. You don’t have control over everything that is going on around you but you always have control over how you will react to it.

So when you wake up each morning, do not think of it as a new day. Think of it as a new chance. A new beginning. Another chance. Tell yourself yesterday does not make you. You are what you are doing today. Do not let yesterday’s chains keep you from the light today is giving you.

Actually, the world will just keep on spinning whether you go along with it or not. But isn’t it wonderful to go along with it? To grab each new day as a present, even when it isn’t just so? You don’t have to know everything to make the day count. To be ready to do it all again is sufficient.

Perhaps all you require is that single little thing to get your day started. That single little thing might be stretching your body out, drinking a glass of water, writing one sentence in your journal, texting a friend, or simply opening the door and breathing. All these little things create momentum. All of them are saying to you, “I’m still here, and I’m still moving.”

Here’s the reminder I want you to take with you: You are greater than your mistakes. Greater than your fears. Greater than whatever you didn’t accomplish yesterday. You are a work in progress, and you get to start over—not just once, but as many times as necessary. That’s the unshakable grace that every morning brings.

You’re not the only one doing this. We’re all doing this. We’re all stumbling through life the best we can. And sometimes all we need is a gentle reminder that we don’t have to be stuck. That forward is still a possibility. That growth is still a possibility. And that joy, love, peace, and success are on the table still—even if today is just the tiny first step in their direction.

While I am saying this to you, I trust that it reminds you of the amount more: even that little wee spark of motivation. I hope it reminds you of how your life is not put on pause, but every morning that you wake up is another reminder the universe continues to give you that your path is not finished yet – that you have more to live, more to achieve, more to become, and more mornings to come in order to take you there.

So stand still for a moment today and marvel at the morning for what it is: a promise. A daily promise that there is still life, and you are still a part of it. Breathe in the promise. Let it awaken you. Let it make you want to smile, to begin, to attempt again.

I hope this poem is of at least some use as you stumble your way through life. To a beautiful day and enjoy today’s day, all the best.
