A Dream Ignited…..
There was a lovely young lady named Amelia Brooks in a Colorado suburban town in 1965. Amelia Brooks was a blue-eyed blonde with a rather pretty face and a beaming smile. She was not an ordinary girl; She was intelligent. Amelia had an interest in the mystery of the universe from her childhood. Her eyes would glimmer in wonder as she gazed upwards at the evening sky, dreaming of what was out there beyond the stars. “One day I’ll go beyond the stars,” She would tell anyone who would listen. Deep inside, she knew that she was destined for greatness. She was sure she had a place. a place even beyond the stars. When the first successful human spaceflight Vostok 1 (“East 1”) with the 27-year-old Russian, Yuri Gagarin on 12 April 1961 caught the world off guard, Amelia knew that her flight beyond the stars was a mission potential. She just had to try harder to achieve her dream.
Amelia’s love for space was encouraged by her father, William Brooks. William, a legendary astrophysicist. They would spend hours and hours in their backyards, staring at the stars and discussing the wonders of the universe. Amelia Brooks would fantasize about flying to space But as Amelia grew up, her dreams of exploring space had a mighty rival – pressures from society.

Amelia’s dad, William, had envisioned a different sort of future for his daughter. William was a highly connected businessman and had arranged for a marriage proposal from a very rich billionaire, Richard Thornton. According to William, this marriage would secure Amelia in life and provide her with all the comforts of life. Amelia never considered that a woman’s ultimate achievement is marriage and child-bearing. Amelia wanted to leave her mark on the world.
One evening, after a day of intensive stargazing, William spoke to Amelia about the issue.
“My dear, you know how much I wish for your good fortune in the future. Richard Thornton is an honorable fellow, and you should seriously consider his proposal.” Amelia, just turned 23, stared at her father, aghast. “Daddy, I’m grateful for your concern, but my heart lies out there. I want to go into space, to be among the stars and experience the unknown. I would marry Mr. Thornton to stifle my dreams.” William took a deep breath, unable to comprehend his daughter’s fervent enthusiasm. “Amelia, I can see how much you want this, but space flight is a dangerous and uncertain undertaking. Richard can provide you with stability and security.” Amelia would not settle. “Dad, I promise to be safe. Please try to see; this is what I am meant to do.” Williams took a deep breath. He sympathized with his daughter’s dreams but he was scared of failing.
He did not want her to fail at her dreams.
To him, she should be like her mother. She should be married to a rich old man like Richard Thornton who would provide for her well and secure her and the family inheritance in the future. Her mother’s last wish was to take care of their daughter and establish her in the future. He gazed at his daughter staring at the stars with determination. He understood how single-minded she could become when she set her mind to something. ALSO READ: My life almost turned sour overnight A Reluctant Promise.
Months passed while weeks flew by and Amelia still persisted in pursuing her dream to soar in space.
She signed up for physics and engineering courses, determined to school herself with whatever was required.
Her resolve was never faltering, however much her father disapproved. He’d always remind her, ever so quietly, that he wouldn’t always be there. “Amelia, I need you to get my point of view. I want what is best for you,” He’d often tell her. “Yes, father. I understand, though. What matters most in life, though, is living for you. I simply can’t do your dream for you, father,” She’d smile back in response. When father and daughter stood beneath a night sky full of a thousand stars on one evening, William sighed for the umpteenth time. “Amelia, I can see how dedicated you are to this dream. If you promise to be careful and never get yourself into harm’s way unnecessarily, I will stand behind you in your quest to reach space.” Amelia’s heart was lifted with hope.
“Thank you, Father. I promise I’ll make you proud.” With eyes shining in the night moonlight, Williams smiled as he remembered her mother. “You take after your mother.” He said. “And I know she is proud of you, father.” Amelia replied. Williams smiled as he recollected the good old days with his deceased wife.
Abruptly he said, “Promise me you will have a family.” “No, father.” Amelia replied stubbornly. “What?!” Williams looked at her in horror as his heart fell. Amelia laughed. “Oh, only kidding, daddy. Of course, I will have my own family.” Williams sighed with relief as he answered, “Okay, silly.” “I will have a family, daddy. But not Richard Thornton!” She declared firmly. She faced many challenges, from gender bias within the scientific arena to the financial limitations of pursuing her dreams. “You are ridiculous!” Her suitor, Richard had informed her when she officially spurned his proposal of marriage. She could sense disdain in his eyes as he stood glaring at her like she was a mission impossible.
She had stood up for herself, chin up and retorted, “There is more to life than warming your bed and cooking your food, Richard!” “You will regret it! You will crawl back and I will not take you in. There are willing girls in Colorado who will gladly accept my offer.” Richard had retorted. “Well, let them jump at your offer, Richard. I’m not them. End the strife and go for them!” Amelia had retorted.
Her dad didn’t speak a word when he watched his business partner and daughter’s encounter. “Williams! Our deal is off!” Richard thundered at him and stormed out the door of their house. “I’m sorry, father. But I had to.” She whispered to her dad. He smiled knowingly and patted her on the back before he got out of the house to have some fresh air.
But her unyielding determination pushed her forward. She excelled in school, graduating with degrees in astrophysics and aerospace engineering. Amelia’s dedication soon caught the attention of Dr. Helen Roberts, a pioneering astronaut and scientist. Dr. Roberts mentored her and took her through the complex world of space research.
With the support of Dr. Roberts, Amelia was accepted by a leading space agency. She trained rigorously, both physically and mentally, for the brutal demands of traveling in space. Her days consisted of simulations, astronaut training, and an innate push for perfection.

A Heart’s Desire
Even though there was satisfaction at work, there was emptiness in Amelia’s heart.
She had dedicated herself to her space travel dream, but she yearned to have someone to share her life with, someone who understood her dream and was there for her without conditions.
Although she realized that she was society’s perfect beauty in every aspect, she could not afford to be distracted by boys.
She wanted to make difference that transcended being pretty and having a great figure. As she was now approaching her dream, she desired a man who could share her enthusiasm. One day, at a conference on astrophysics, Amelia met a scientist called Daniel. He was good-looking, intelligent, compassionate, and like her, had an interest in the universe. They hit it off immediately, and their love for each other increased every day. She had met him on her way back from an experiment session that she conducted with her team. She had stayed back when her colleagues had left the laboratory. She was allowed to stay back by Dr. Roberts but sternly warned that she would not be staying for long.
Nevertheless, Amelia became over-enthusiastic and stayed on till 2 am.
When she came out of the laboratory, she saw a black car following her and immediately felt she was being followed. She saw Richard Thornton get out of the car with a sly smile on his face as he ordered the two men who were with him to force her into his car. A second car pulled up and Daniel stepped out with flair. Richard Thornton was angry because Daniel was his boss and CEO of the company he worked for as a district manager. Daniel was a 27-year-old young man who had inherited the company from his father and had been working extra hard to increase the company’s revenue by 500%. Daniel entered the equation and their love affair started that day. Daniel became her rock, her confidant, and her greatest supporter. Amelia’s father, witnessing the love between his daughter and Daniel, began to reconsider his resistance to her marriage. He realized that true happiness was not in money or what society wanted but in the arms of love and pursuing one’s dreams. A Chance of a Lifetime Years of persistent dedication yielded payoffs for Amelia when she was informed about news of a lifetime. She was selected to form part of an interstellar space mission to tour a distant planet known as Epsilon Prime. The mission was a first in history, and Amelia was selected on merit and unwavering dedication towards space travel.
With Daniel by her side and with her father now supporting her, Amelia embarked on the journey of a lifetime. The training was tough and the challenges intimidating, but she approached them as fiercely as she had approached them when she was a child.
As launch day approached, Amelia stood before the massive spaceship, her chest pounding with excitement. Beside her stood her father, his eyes brimming with pride and a glint of tears. “You’ve made me very proud, Amelia. I believe in you, and I know that you’ll be back home safely.”
Amelia embraced her father. “Thank you for believing in me, Father. I love you.”
A Journey Among the Stars
The moment had finally arrived. With a thunderous boom, the spaceship carrying Amelia and her crew burst into the world above. Breaking through the Earth’s atmosphere, Amelia’s heart burst with wonder and excitement. For months, the crew traveled around the universe, their spaceship soaring through space at velocities unimaginable. Amelia was in awe of the awe of the universe, conducting experiments and research that would unveil new horizons of knowledge for humankind on the cosmos.
Amelia’s mission for Epsilon Prime was a triumph. Her team collected a wealth of information regarding the exoplanet and the possibility of human settlement. During the trip back to Earth, Amelia’s heart swelled with great pride. She had fulfilled her childhood dream and demonstrated how determination can be used to overcome the greatest adversities.
The world opened its arms to Amelia as a hero, a pioneer who had shattered the glass ceiling of space travel. Her father, seeing her return to earth, his eyes filled with tears, knew he was right in pushing his dream girl.
Amelia’s homecoming was the festival that marked her new life. She and Daniel, who were now married, continued working on their study of astrophysics and space exploration. They both were strong believers in gender equality in the profession and motivated girls to have big dreams.
And as for William Brooks, he was prouder of his daughter than anyone could ever have been. He had learned that acceptance and love were better than any present which society had to give, and he loved the bond he shared with Amelia.
A Legacy Among the Stars
Amelia’s journey to space inspired all of them, and her life became a legend of determination, perseverance, and the power of chasing one’s dream. Her legacy remained alive in the hearts of scientists, dreamers, and aspiring astronauts across the world.
And gazing up at the blackness of night, Amelia knew that she had fulfilled her childhood dream. She had gone out into the enormity of space, but she had also proven that through sheer perseverance, the most unlikely of fantasies can be brought to life.
As the stars twinkled overhead, Amelia quietly to herself made a vow, a vow to keep striving for the stars and to challenge others to do the same, for the universe held unlimited miracles to be discovered, and man could be transported beyond the stars by hope.
