The poem “An Island” is a silent declaration of love, loneliness, and personal decision. Fundamentally, it is about a person who has physically or emotionally strayed from the bustle of the outside world and ended up alone on an “island.” This island symbolizes a time of introspection, liberation, and discovery as well as a physical getaway. With this thought in mind, let’s share a poem reflecting this, and we hope you enjoy reading this piece as much as we enjoyed every bit of the publishing process!

An Island

Sitting by the edge of the water, alone in an island,
waiting for the waves to bring me back to the beach
I was swimming, in water and thoughts,
Now I'm stuck on an island, no idea how I got here
But if I'm being honest, it's really not as bad as it seems.
If there were cameras in my mind, then I could show you
The memories of all the things I did
And how happy I was doing them because there
There was no one here to see. But I was the happiest
I've ever been, and still I chose to come back to you
For you and for me too.
I hope you're happy too.
I hope you know that I really, really care.
Because you’re my island.
And maybe I could be your island too.

Picture this…

After a while of being overwhelmed — by work deadlines, family expectations, and the dull hurt of a relationship that wasn’t as spark-filled as it used to be — a lady booked a solo trip. There was no Instagram announcement or schedule. She had no belongings but she, a suitcase, and a boat to a tiny beach town where no one knew her.

She had a longer walk on the beach on one particular day than she ever had previously. She waded in deeper than she ever had previously, over the rocks, and somehow ended up at this small cove that was like an island hidden away far from the world. No signal. Just quiet. Just herself and her thoughts.

What’s your state now?
This poem ends up being a poem of emotional dualism: choosing connection even when we are happy to be alone. This is about time spent away, clarity of being away, and the bravery of coming back to someone we love. So, where are you now? Are you reaching out, healing, remembering, or drifting? Perhaps you’re alone at this moment and finding solace in the quiet, or perhaps you’re at peace with someone somewhere.

Thanks for reading!
